ISP Network Automation: Managing ONTs and Network Traffic

Every new subscriber that joins an internet service provider (ISP) network represents an operational challenge: register the ONU on the OLT, assign the VLAN, configure the service profiles, verify the optical signal and leave everything ready to browse. Doing this by hand, modem by modem, does not scale.
At RFJ Software we built a provisioning engine to solve exactly that problem: a high-performance webservice developed in Rust with the Actix framework that automates the complete lifecycle of ONUs across the most widely used GPON/EPON access equipment in the region.
Why Rust to provision a network?
Operating a network access layer demands processing thousands of concurrent operations without latency or errors. Rust offers the speed of a systems language with memory safety guarantees at compile time, and Actix provides an asynchronous concurrency model that handles traffic peaks — for example, an installation night or a massive billing campaign — without degrading operations.
The result is a lightweight, stable and deterministic service, ideal for running inside the operator's infrastructure, where every millisecond counts.
Compatibility with the leading manufacturers
The platform connects directly to the OLTs, with no intermediate agents required inside the customer's network. The engine speaks the standard protocols that field equipment already understands:
- Telnet / SSH for command-line management of the OLTs.
- SNMP for supervision, parameter reading and real-time control.
Thanks to this integration layer, the webservice operates over ZTE (C300 and C600 series), Huawei, C-DATA, Fiberhome, Nokia and other manufacturers' equipment, with a unified interface regardless of the brand or generation of the device.
From manual activation to provisioning in minutes
The webservice covers the complete subscriber lifecycle, from the first connection to the suspension and reactivation of the service:
- Mass serial provisioning (OMCI auto-registration): when the ONU serial number is registered, the system auto-configures it on the OLT without technician intervention.
- Service profile and VLAN management: consistent assignment of service profiles, VLANs and priorities across the entire network from a single interface.
- Optical power diagnostics (RX/TX): real-time reading of each ONU's signal to validate installations and detect plant faults before the subscriber reports them.
- Billing suspension and reactivation: integration with the billing cycle to suspend the service for non-payment and reactivate it automatically once the payment is confirmed, with no truck rolls.
- Alarms and notifications: detection of offline ONUs, power drops and network events with actionable alerts in real time.
- Configuration snapshots: backup and restore of the equipment state to quickly recover services after failures or changes.
Runs inside your infrastructure
Unlike cloud platforms that require sending sensitive network data to third parties, this webservice is licensed and installed on the ISP's own infrastructure. The operator keeps full control over its equipment, credentials and traffic, meeting the sovereignty and security requirements of the telecommunications business.
It also exposes a clean, documented API that integrates with the subscriber management, billing and monitoring systems the operator already uses, so its technical team can connect it to their own stack without rewriting processes.
